Daniel Schnyder, alto flute & sax

The Swiss American composer saxophonist and flutist, Daniel Schnyder was born 1961 in Zurich, Switzerland. 

 

He is a resident of New York City, living in Harlem.

 

Daniel Schnyder performs as a soloist, jazz musician and classical chamber musician at major festivals and concert series worldwide.

 

His music bridges the worlds of classical music, jazz and ethnic music in innovative ways.

 

As a composer his large catalogue of works contains compositions of almost all genres, ranging from Big Band to Chamber Music, Opera and Symphonic compositions.

 

Among his credits as a composer are commissions to write new works for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York, the American Composers Orchestra ACO, the Tonkünstler Orchester in Vienna, the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Berlin, The Norrlands Operan in Sweden, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Vienna Art Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the Opera of Bern, the NDR Orchestra in Hannover, the NDR Big Band in Hamburg, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the New York based new music group "Absolute Ensemble" under the direction of Kristjan Jaervi, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the American Composers Orchestra, the Postclassical Ensemble in DC., the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and Opera Philadelphia.

 

The Album "Absolution" (Enja Nova) featuring Daniel Schnyder's Bass Trombone Concerto played by bass trombone virtuoso David Taylor received a Grammy nomination for "Best Classical Small Ensemble Recording" in 2002. 

 

As an arranger/composer Daniel produced albums for jazz artists Abdullah Ibrahim ("African Suite"), Lee Konitz ("Tribute to Billie Holiday”), Franco Ambrosetti and Paquito D'Rivera ("Habañera", Enja Records). He also worked with Simon Shaheen, Bassam Saba, Min Xiao Fen, Marcel Kalife and Jamey Haddad on a variety of projects, merging Arab music and Chinese music elements with jazz and classical music.

 

Daniel Schnyder's Opera 'Abraham', a 120 min work for choir, soloists, Arab Music Ensemble and large orchestra, was premiered in Duesseldorf, Jerusalem and Bonn in November 2014. The Opera ‘Charlie Parker’s Yardbird’, a commission by Opera Philadelphia, got premiered in June 2015 with the eminent tenor Laurence Brownlee as Charlie Parker. Subsequently the opera was staged in Chicago, New York City, London, Madison WI, Atlanta, Seattle, Phoenix and New Orleans. His Oratorium 'REVELATION of ST John’ about the end of time for choir, organ, large orchestra and soloists was played in Barcelona, Milwaukee and Budapest.

 

Daniel Schnyder works often as a consultant and composer/soloist in residence with major festivals and ensembles bridging the worlds of classical music, jazz and ethnic music in innovative ways.
